@matcha-chai-latte @under-my-pillow I agree w both of your thoughts. Boy! this post really brought up so many interesting aspects (thanks op for that^^).
How I see Soo-Won’s pre-coup thought process is that he was a bit overconfident on himself. Like @under-my-pillow said, he didn't wanted to risk his plan by spilling it to his friends whom he had seen pretty indifferent on the issue. And there's also Il we're talking abt. Remember he didn't let lil Soo-Won enter the mausoleum cz he might have thought Soo-Won’s step would taint the purity of the place (the fanatic manic as he was). Yona saw that & got scared but she never asked her father why he treated Soo-Won so badly like that. My point is if Il got a hint of Soo-Won trying to manipulate Yona, he could easily ban him to visit the castle, which in Soo-Won’s logical mind, he couldn't risk.
By overconfident, I mean he's so sure he'd be able to discard his friends & will be able to live on like that. But he's wrong. His plan got twisted when Yona came to Il's chamber. He didn't anticipate that. So it became difficult for him to handle the situation & Keishuk suggested to get rid of her. But he couldn't do that. Logically, he should have ordered to kill Yona & shouldn't risk his plans, but he started to feel conflicted. Him letting hak yona live, saving yona multiple times, willing to face Hak's warth in water tribe...those aren't the doings of his *rational* self but he did that instinctively as the person he truly is. I've a feeling that he too is aware of this weakness of his and he had seen how those emotional attachments were the downfall of his father ie Kouka in general. So he desperately tried to avoid/ get rid of that. Tried to bottle up his feelings to his core. But he's failed multiple times & during the current arc, we have seen him trying so hard to look at the *chess pieces* like a drowning child trying to catch a straw. But he failed & now has almost given up trying it. That's why now we see his original self..that would jump into rubbles to save his friends w/o a sec thought. Logically it's very stupid of him to do that...risking his life at the time when the nation is at shambles. But he couldn't hold himself anymore.
Well I agree that 3 of them could have done things differently to avoid the tragedy but again if that was the case than the story would not have started, no? So yes they are all guilty of their actions. And it's totally okay to be wrong!! But what irks me is that it's always Soo-Won who gets blamed for everything! None in the narrative & also most readers point their finger on Yona & Hak for their faults? WHY??? It's so unfair! I'm tired of the double standards tbh.
Hero vs Villain
The Antagonist Soo-won in the manga is the "I'll save the world for you" type of guy. Basically every hero ever. He loved his dad, so he became the king who saved the Kingdom just as his dad wanted him to.
Tumblr media
The main protagonist Hak on the other hand is the "I'll burn the word down to save her" type guy. Classis villain. He killed anyone trying to harm Yona to save her life on the day of the regicide. He would kill anything and anyone for Yona.
Yet, we love Hak and Yona, cheered for their growth and development and was appalled by Soo won's betrayal. I just adore how Mizuho Kusanagi plays with perspective. Akatsuki no Yona was a villains perspective all along. From the beginning, she was the spoilt princess of a selfish king leading a kingdom to ruin. Hak knew this, being a generals son, he was very aware how how things were outside the castle but he didn't care, if it meant Yona would be happy.

furtively tries to express my appreciation for BTS’s insane showmanship without gaining the reputation of Being a Kpop Blog
Actually leTS TALK ABOUT THE REPUTATION OF THE KPOP BLOG 👩‍🏫
So to a certain extent I understand why “friend’s blog became a Kpop blog” is a meme. From the outside, a lot of the Kpop fan activity seems quite vapid. The impression I got in previous years was that it’s mostly about gushing over handsome boys and a/b/o rpf. And that’s not........entirely wrong, but we’ll get into that more in a sec.
Another factor is that Kpop fandom is hard to follow. The barrier to entry is higher than with other fandoms. In posts, individual Kpop stars are referred to by name, stage name, or nickname, and the band they belong to isn’t always obvious, so it’s quite easy to lump it all into “Kpop”; it takes work for a new fan to differentiate the groups if you don’t know them ahead of time. Kpop fandom has its own lingo that differs from other fan language (other media fans don’t use “bias” or “delulu” — and there’s a linguistics dissertation for you). And let’s not discount the other language barrier — Korean isn’t exactly a common first language, so it does take a bit of extra work to find subtitles and translations.
This might be why the Suddenly A Kpop Blog Event supposedly triggers a different reaction in followers. I’m still following most of my friends from crit role season 1, even though a good chunk of them blog about other stuff now (what is this Chinese show? Boy with magic flute? Gay? Help). Fittingly, I’ve seen memes about how people are ride or die for their mutuals even when they move to different fandoms, but the jokes about Kpop blogs are always a bit different — about how turning into a Kpop blog is a bit cursed of u. It’s to the point where this is only “secretly a Kpop blog” because I don’t want the “Kpop blog” reputation.
And from my fandom lurking I can say that part of that reputation is not unearned. A lot of Kpop fans on tumblr engage in it in ways I’m either disinterested in or actively opposed to (the shipping wars are as terrifying as their reputation suggests. Some were arguing one ship was an rl canon true secret relationship because someone in BTS wrote the letter K on his drawing. Even though the letter K is in his name.) The reason I’ve been “secretly a Kpop blog” is that a lot of Kpop posts don’t inspire me into reblog frenzies the way crit role memes used to, and that’s not because Kpop Stans Suck — it’s more just a matter of taste. Then again, I do like gifs, but if I start reblogging BTS gifs, then I’m a Kpop Blog......and you don’t want to be a Kpop blog.
But isn’t there a whiff of “I’m not like other girls” about all that? Like, yeah, of course Kpop fans hoard gifs of the same people and overanalyze them. That’s what fans do! Pretending I didn’t overanalyze the shit out of Taliesin and Laura’s micro-expressions before Perc’ahlia was a thing would just be disingenuous. We’re all looking too closely — one of the best things about being a fan is diving into the excess of art and making things out of it. We all make mountains out of molehills because mountains are more scenic. And, on a baser level, we are all thirsty bastards. I have SEEN you all reblogging the gifs of Chris Evans ripping the log in half, okay, and you were not doing it bc of the camera angle, just own the thirst. Even the problems the Kpop fandoms have aren’t problems unique to Kpop — aggressive shippers and “””””problematic””” fans are everywhere.
I also wonder if the reason why we don’t see as much Kpop analysis on tumblr is because we’ve created kind of a hostile environment for it. Whether you are a Kpop fan or not, we’ve all decided to treat Kpop as kind of silly — the fans give it their all in the departments of cutesy photo sets and ridiculous fic prompts, and we laugh at memes of Gimli saying “never thought I’d die side by side with a Kpop fan” anyway Stan Jungkook. Just like thirst and over analyzing, that’s not necessarily a bad thing — I love that meme, and you should Stan Jungkook — but it does mean that if you want to start taking it a bit more seriously, or even a bit more casually, the assumption is that all your old tumblr friends will ditch you because “you’ve gone to the dark side”
And that’s a shame because uhhhhhh there is some baller stuff to analyze in BTS’s discography. The album before last was based on Jungian psychology (???). Their leader and primary writer is a huge fan of multilingual puns so in the latest album he makes a three-way pun on the phrase “I’m ill” — he’s sick, he’s cool, and he’s overworked (because “il” in Korean means “work”). So is he sick or is he simply made sick by like, society’s expectations of labour under capital???? Like, you know me. Societal critique by way of pun. That’s my shit. There’s also an essay or two in me about the way BTS are marketed for fan consumption and the way we handle multilingual lyrics and the way they’re handling the temporary departure of one of their members (he is an absolute cat of a man and I hope he gets well soon).
Also fuck can J-Hope ever dance.
EDIT: I should probably acknowledge that I can only make this justification for BTS, which is the only Kpop group I really like; I got no idea about the rest of them. I do know that Shinee can Also dance.
I might get the essays out but this probably won’t become “a Kpop blog” if you’re not into that. I think I’ve internalized too much of the stigma (omg V has a song called stigma it’s so good check it out find a good translation), but also, like I said, I don’t vibe with much of the other content and I kind of only follow one extremely successful group. The gifs, though. The gifs might be coming. They are pretty, those boys.
Anyway! People don’t like Kpop for nothing so like Maybe you would also like Kpop? Who knows. At the very least, think before u meme.

me again! how do you make your stimboards? il them sm and want to try making some of my own on my moodboard blog
I either get gifs from stim blogs, Giphy, and Google Images, or I make my own gifs. I get the videos for my gifs from Instagram mostly because I followed a lot of stimmy-type pages. YouTube is also a good place to get gifs from!
To make the gifs, you have to download the videos first, which you can do at these websites:
For just Instagram videos (x)
For Instagram videos that also have pictures in the post (x)
For YouTube videos (x)
Then, you have to make the gifs from the videos, which you can do here:
Giphy (only allows videos that are 59 secs or less) (x)
EZgif (x)
Make sure your gifs are squares btw. Most gifs from an Instagram video are square, but sometimes they aren’t and you have to crop them into a square; you can do that on EZgif! Also, sometimes when you try to save a gif from a blog, it might save as a WEBP file, which you have to convert to a gif. You can use EZgif for that as well, or you can go to this website (x).
As for the pride flags that I put in the middle of my moodboards, I have damn near every more commonly known pride flag saved already lmao. So I just resize them into squares using Microsoft PowerPoint or Word, which probably sounds weird, but it’s because I can evenly size it with those programs because you can see how many inches it is on all sides. And the base banners (meaning without the writing and hearts on them), I do the same way. I make the combo flags and combo banners using the same programs, too. And then I paste them into Paint and save them. As for the completed banners, I do those in PowerPoint so I can make sure everything is even on them. There’s probably like.... way, way easier ways to do the banners and images, but that’s just what I do because it’s easier for me lmao.
And the gradient text, you already know how to do! As for the colorful links, I just take the colors from the gradient to color the hearts for my links lol. Oh, and make sure you link the posts before you start messing with the HTML to make the gradient; it’s a lot easier than properly manually inserting the links into the HTML.
If you have any questions or run into any problems when making a stimboard, feel free to DM me! 😊

Ostinato: A Tale of Sotto Voce
Oooh, look what I finished :D
-o-o-o-
Title: Ostinato
A Tale of Sotto Voce
Author: Gumnut
Aug 2019
Fandom: Thunderbirds Are Go 2015/ Thunderbirds TOS
Rating: Teen
Summary: Why the Hood didn’t currently have him under his thumb, why he could now see and speak to John without innate terror, why he hadn’t thrown himself into Thunderbird Three’s silo and why Thunderbird Five was still mostly in one piece. But most of all, why he was still alive.
Word count: 8400 ( that is not a frickin’ ficlet!)
Spoilers & warnings: Angst, hurt/comfort, family, science fiction
Timeline: Shortly before the last scene of ‘Il Mago’, as they don’t know the identity of Il Mago, definitely before ‘Father’.
Author’s note: Nutty’s Fandomversary Fic Ten – Prompt: ‘I’d still love to see a brother (maybe Gordon while healing from injury) sleepwalk to five or John sleepwalk down to TI.’ for @melmac78
I’m afraid I don’t think I answered your request ☹ Because Eos monitors the space elevator, it would only be with her permission that the prompt could happen. So, to get as close as possible, I delved into Sotto Voce. I hope you enjoy what resulted anyway. Sorry I couldn’t answer correctly.
Also, it is midnight here and I will admit that I haven’t re-read the last bits of this as thoroughly as I should, but I’m tired and just want to post this. I’ll probably curse it when I discover some horrible error in the morning, but I need to go to bed. I hope you enjoy it anyway. Many thanks to @vegetacide and @scribbles97 for their help on this one.
Disclaimer: Mine? You’ve got to be kidding. Money? Don’t have any, don’t bother.
-o-o-o-
“Virgil, you there?”
“Hmm? Yes, John?” He let his fingers dance over the piano keys seeking reassurance. Today wasn’t one of his better days since the Maggot and he was doing his best to turn it around. Piano was good. Piano gave absolution.
The ivory was smooth under his fingertips.
“I’m sending the elevator down. Could you pack me some Y-345 and T-3245 process rods? Brains needs to replace six of each in the computer core.”
Virgil arched an eyebrow. “So, I’m allowed in the hangars now?”
It had been a long recovery. Since the attack, he had been plagued by headaches and an awful narcolepsy that had kept him down and barred from the hangers for safety reasons. It had gotten to the point that Virgil was surprised he was allowed on the balconies without a chaperone.
But then he had one anyway, didn’t he?
I wouldn’t really call myself a chaperone, Uncle. More of a supervisor?
Supervisor implies you can tell me what to do, Eos.
I can. Not that you’ll listen.
You’ve got it in one.
John, unaware of what was being said, but suspecting something was afoot, glared at him from his little hologram on top of the piano. His hair was still blond, though the red was starting to show. “Have you two finished?”
Still playing, Virgil hid a smile. “She’s your kid, bro.”
“And you are still a bad influence.”
The smile broke into a grin. “Glad to be of service.”
“That’s fabulous, but could you be of better service and pack me those process rods?”
The grin faded to be replaced with a frown. “What’s wrong?” John was uncharacteristically on edge.
“Nothing.”
Virgil’s frown deepened. “Do I have to speak to Eos?”
John glared at him, and Virgil swallowed. Something must have registered on his face because John was immediately contrite. “I’m sorry, Virgil. It’s just with Scott, Alan and Gordon on rescues and TB5 not fully up to par. It is a little frustrating.”
Virgil cursed himself for his reaction. When the hell was he going to get over that?! Most of the time he was fine, but on the now rare occasion, John’s expression would trigger him and he couldn’t help himself. John scared him, but it wasn’t John who was the cause of his fear. It hurt the both of them and he hated it.
“No, it’s not your fault. Never your fault.” A sigh and the music came to a stop. “I’ll hunt down your rods and meet with the elevator.”
“Thank you, Virgil.”
“Not a problem.”
His brother signed off and Virgil pushed himself back from the keys. At least he could be marginally useful. He was still banned from working on his ‘bird. He was getting better, but there were still moments.
A roll of his shoulders to loosen up his muscles and he stood.
Grandma was the only person on the island with him at the moment. Kayo was with Penelope, continuing their hunt for his assailant, while Brains was up on TB5 with John. It was so quiet, it was lonely.
He shook himself. God, the self-pity was ridiculous.
Eos didn’t remark at that thought but there was a wash of indescribable emotion.
He ignored it and headed for the elevator. Process rods were one of the many spare parts stored in the lower caverns. The network of caves below the villa was massive. It was the reason his father had chosen this island and it served them all so well. Cavecutters had ground out the spaces not naturally provided and International Rescue was able to operate solely because of all the automatic machinery these caverns housed.
The elevator hit the hangar floor and Virgil walked past his beloved ‘bird to the cavern access on the far side of the bay. The module train sat snug in its niche and he found himself blinking at the familiar sight.
More self-pity.
Shit.
He was on a roll today.
Another sigh. Calm, keep it calm. No need to trigger one of those blasted headaches again.
Maybe this was a basic reason to keep out of the hangers. Too much temptation and memory. Here was where he had kidnapped Brains. Here was where he had nearly shot his brother with Thunderbird Two’s laser. Looking up, he could still see the scorch marks on the massive hanger door.
Self-pity shifted to hate for a man now dead.
He grit his teeth.
Focus.
The storage cavern was full of neatly organised and labelled resources. Virgil, of course, knew exactly where to find what he needed. The process rods were light in his grasp. He threw in a few extra and with a further thought, grabbed a trolley and threw on some of the standard supply run items that his brother might need, plus a few extra processors for Eos.
Thank you, Uncle.
Are you watching everything I do? It was both annoying and reassuring.
Of course, I am. You’re in the hangars.
And I can’t be trusted. His shoulders slumped.
You know that is not the reason, Virgil.
Yeah, well, it sucks anyway. He shoved a few more components into the trolley.
You are getting better.
It is taking forever. So he was being petulant.
“Virgil?”
Another sigh. “I’m fine, John, just gathering your stuff.”
“You okay?”
“I’m fine!”
The line fell silent and he knew his brother didn’t believe a word. Another wave of disappointment in himself hit. Man, he was in the dumps today.
A dozen LED spots landed in the trolley with a clunk.
Okay, this was getting ridiculous. He grabbed the spots and checked them over visually for damage. Maybe he shouldn’t be in the hangars if a depressive mood had him breaking things.
Another sigh.
For goodness sake, get the hell over it! This wasn’t him. This wasn’t how he thought. Where was the positive? Where was his strength? He leant over the trolley, his elbows on the handle and rubbed his face.
“Virgil?”
“Okay, okay, I’m coming. Be at the elevator asap.”
Focus, for crying out loud.
He shoved the trolley ahead of him, darting among the shelves.
There was another trek across the hangar past his ‘bird which he purposefully ignored, into the elevator and up several levels to the space elevator’s dock.
The cavern beyond was so empty it hurt. TB1 and Shadow were absent and the space echoed his loneliness back at him.
For Christ’s sake!
A sudden roar as the elevator fired its thrusters, slowing its descent. At least the noise filled the vacuum.
A clunk and she docked solidly. “Elevator secure.” Eos’ voice echoed over the comms.
“Thank you, Eos.”
“You are always welcome.” There was a smile in her voice.
He placed his palm on the hatch control and it blinked in recognition, the airlock opening. He strode in and found a stash of recycling in the freight containers. A little component juggling and he had the necessaries loaded and the unnecessaries lined up for the recycler. “Okay, John, she’s almost ready to haul up. Give me a sec for a pre-flight check.”
“FAB.”
Virgil paused a moment, staring at the controls of the elevator. A breath and his fingers ran through the checks automatically.
It was good to know that the knowledge had survived the frying of his brain.
His shoulders shifted under the weight of the depressive emotion that followed.
Definitely a bad day.
He needed his piano. Or paint. Or something.
Goddamnit!
Something shifted in his head.
Oh, shit.
He suddenly knew what was going to happen. No, not here! He turned towards the hatch. Get off the elevator. Get off-
He was on the decking, his hands barely catching him as his body succumbed to the sudden forced sleep cycle.
His head hit his forearm, and the world faded.
-o-o-o-
Eos knew the moment her uncle lost consciousness. She brushed electronic fingers across his interface and was reassured that he was simply asleep, victim of his narcolepsy. The fact he was asleep on the floor of the space elevator was the challenge.
“Father?”
John was in conversation with Scott on the far side of the planet, the Eldest struggling with a plane that was determined to fall out of the sky. Thunderbird Two’s presence would have been preferable and the man’s profanity proved that. However, neither Two nor her pilot were in any condition to go anywhere.
Current situation more than enough proof.
“Yes, Eos? Is the elevator ready to return?”
“Yes, John, but-“
“Please launch it, Eos. Scott, I am sorry, but my scanners are not at full capacity. This is all the information I can give you.”
Eos flicked back down to the elevator and checked again on her uncle. A number of calculations, safety variables. A glance in her father’s direction. A decision.
She fired the elevator’s thrusters and it launched from the island.
For the next eight minutes she hovered over that elevator, micro-firing adjustments, protecting her uncle as he was not fastened securely. She got him through the jet stream, up through turbulence until he was finally free of the atmosphere. Braking started early, the elevator slowing incrementally in order to prevent Virgil from being slammed into the ceiling at speed.
“Eos, what are you doing with the elevator?”
Her father had finally noticed. “We have a visitor.”
That drew his full attention. “What? Who?”
“Virgil fell asleep in the elevator.”
“He did what?!”
“His narcolepsy flared as he was doing pre-flight checks.”
“And you launched?!” The frown on her father’s face was volatile.
“You asked me to.”
“Eos!”
“He is safe! I would not risk him.”
“But why?”
The elevator was travelling so slowly by this point it was hardly moving. It slid into dock with barely a vibration against its moorings. “Father, his thoughts have been somewhat depressed. I thought company would help.”
The worry on John’s face spiked. “What thoughts?”
“Father, I respect his privacy, however, today his emotional status has been poor. I don’t think being alone is in his best interests at the moment.” She paused. “You can do things I cannot.”
He looked up at her camera, expression thoughtful. “Monitor my brothers while I attend to Virgil.”
“Yes, Father.”
John propelled himself towards the airlock.
-o-o-o-
It had been a hell of a day. That was the only excuse he had and it was a poor one. He had thought offering his brother that simple and urgent task would have helped him.
Apparently not.
And now he was asleep in their space elevator.
The seal hissed as he released it and floated through.
Virgil hovered just above the floor, his open red-checked shirt moving as the man breathed. His eyes were closed and shadowed, his whole body limp.
His brothers had commented often on how Virgil fell asleep all over the house. It had stopped happening so frequently, but not completely.
Virgil was going to be so pissed when he woke up.
John reached out and touched his brother’s cheek. Whispered. “C’mon, bro, let’s get you secured.”
It took John activating his suit’s attitude adjusters to create the momentum to get both him and his much heavier brother moving through the airlock. Some careful manoeuvring through the comms module and he almost ran into Brains as he entered the gravity ring.
Fortunately, the engineer overcame his surprise enough to help catch Virgil as the gravity caught the sleeping man.
“He fell asleep in the elevator.”
Brains’ eyes were roaming over the prone engineer assessing his condition.
“Eos, has been monitoring him. He is okay.”
“I-I will be happier w-when this in-voluntary sleeping c-ceases.”
“Won’t we all.”
They carried the man down the length of the ring to John’s quarters and secured him in his brother’s bed. Virgil’s boots landed on the glass floor.
“He packed our supplies before collapsing. Could you alert Grandma of Virgil’s location and ask her to send up some of his things once the supplies are unpacked?”
Brains nodded and took the gentle request for what it was and left.
John turned back to his brother and sighed.
So much fear and so much anger was wrapped around his big brother. John had done his best to help, but due to the situation, he was often part of the cause. He had run out of profanity to aim at the deceased Hood and the energy along with it.
All that was left was the need to help his brother recover.
And protect him as much as possible.
Il Mago was still out there, somewhere.
Scott...Scott was volatile. Their big brother was struggling with his inability to protect Virgil. John, at least, had tools at his hands to set up digital wards and Eos patrolled continuously. Scott was after the perpetrator like a man possessed. They still didn’t know who it was. Kayo and Penny were desperately looking for clues. Virgil had managed a drawing of the man’s face, but even the artist wasn’t happy with it and facial recognition had been unable to connect any dots. Eos had also seen the man, but she saw things differently in the virtual world and the concepts didn’t quite translate.
It left Scott fighting an unseen foe and so much broken gym equipment. Today’s rescue had at least been a break from the confines of Tracy Island for his eldest brother.
With that thought came the sad irony that someone had to be in danger for the Tracy family to catch a break. Their lives defied logic at times.
Reaching over, he brushed a stray hair off his brother’s forehead. Virgil snuffled in his sleep and began to drool on John’s pillow.
A fond smile was all the astronaut had for that.
All he wanted was for his brother to recover...well, as much as he could. That thought lay embedded in a darkness reeking of a need for revenge that could never be sought as the perpetrator was already dead.
A sigh. He had to get back to his other brothers. “Eos, keep an eye on him.”
“Of course, John.”
The astronaut returned to the comms module and the business of saving people.
-o-o-o-
“Virgil? You awake yet?”
The fog of sleep stifled his response, but he did open his eyes.
“Hey, Virg!”
Blink. Alan?
Try again. “A-Alan?” Ugh, his throat was dry. Air conditioning parch. The pillow under his head had an interesting smell.
Another blink. This wasn’t his pillow. Focus. Hell, this wasn’t his bedroom.
“Three to Virg, are you reading me?”
“Go away.” He swiped a hand in his brother’s direction.
“Do you have any idea where you are?”
“I’m in hell and you’re my penance.” He rolled away from his brother and face the wall. A very wrong coloured wall. What the-?
“You’re on Five, bro. John says you sleep-rode the elevator.”
The elevator?! He shot up in the bed, the lower gravity sending him almost bouncing off the ceiling. He caught himself at the last moment as his head spun and sprouted a whopper of a headache. “Ah, shit!” He dropped his head to his hands and gouged his eyes out with his palms.
“Hey, Virg, take it easy.”
A hand landed on his arm and Virgil forced down a flinch. He groaned. “Alan, what do you want?”
“I was in the area and thought I would check in on you.”
A long drawn out sigh and he forced himself to sit up straight. Alan had been on a rescue. “Status?”
The astronaut’s response was habitual. “All three passengers and the pilot accounted for. Brains is checking them over.” A breath. “Now what about you?”
“Just fabulous.”
Alan peered at him up close. “Tell that to the red roadmaps on your sclera.”
An irritated blink. “How do you even know that word?”
“Did the same first aid courses you did, bro.” Alan sat on the bed beside him. “Headache?”
He gave in. “Yeah.”
“I’ll grab you some pills.”
Whispered. “Thanks, Alan.”
His brother squeezed his shoulder and left the room.
Virgil took the moment to centre himself. A breath and he levered his feet off the bed and onto the glass floor.
Far beneath him the world spun away.
Starlight danced on his skin.
The world spun back into view...Australia, New Zealand...Tracy Island...
The world spun away again.
He closed his eyes against the stars.
Alan’s step was quiet on the glass, his uniform boots designed specifically for this kind of environment. Virgil became abruptly aware of his own lack of uniform. Breach of regulations, breach of safety.
Alan must have picked up on his thoughts. “Don’t worry, Eos had Grandma fetch some of your things. Apparently, John doesn’t think you’ll fit into his.”
Alan’s smile was a little infectious and Virgil found his spirits lifting just a little despite himself.
Quietly. “Thank you, bro.”
Alan’s smile broadened as he handed over the tablets and a bottle of water.
Virgil downed the medication in two quick gulps. The water was lovely and cool on the back of his throat. it loosened tight muscles.
Alan sat down beside him on the bed again. They sat together staring out through the floor.
“I have to say, this view never gets old.”
Virgil blinked. “No, it doesn’t.” Admittedly, he could probably list on one hand how many times he had been up here without a mission. The brothers were happy to call John down, but few of them, except perhaps Alan, came up here much. “It has its own beauty.”
“John said you’ve been having a bad day.”
He darted a glance at his little brother, his head not appreciating the abrupt movement at all. Eos!
Father was concerned! What was I supposed to do? You were asleep in the elevator. You were having a bad day. You were frightened by John at least once. You spent all morning at the piano attempting to chase away negative thoughts, which is probably why you crashed in the elevator. I was worried. John was worried. Youngest was worried. Eldest is currently pacing the comms room, worried. Only the second youngest isn’t worried because Scott ordered me not to tell him.
That is why you don’t tell everyone when I’m feeling like shit, Eos! They worry. I don’t want them to worry. They’ve worried enough. I’ve hurt them all too much already.
The thought hit the core of the matter and he found himself caught in the concept. He hitched in a breath and fought to keep himself in one piece. His brain hammered on the inside of his skull.
“Virgil?”
“I’m-“ He closed his eyes. “Alan, could I have a moment to myself please?” The words were tight and parched.
His little brother stood up. “Uh, yeah, sure. Call if you need anything.” The brush of Alan’s fingertips on his shoulder nearly broke him.
The door slid closed.
He could hold it all back no longer. It was everything. It was what had been done to him. What he had done to his family and the simple fact that he was no longer the Virgil Tracy he wanted to be.
Head in his hands, he let go.
-o-o-o-
“Father!”
John swung around, sonic screwdriver in hand. “Yes, Eos?”
“Virgil is...upset.”
John’s eyes widened. “What happened?”
“The youngest spoke with him. He has a headache and the youngest gave him medication. Virgil admonished me for telling you of his ‘bad day’. His mood shifted to one of despair. He excused the youngest and now he sits with his head in his hands. He is in pain. Please, Father, what do I do?”
John swallowed and wished Scott was here.
But wishing was useless, as his Dad used to say. Work with what you have. And Virgil had John.
“Leave him to me.”
As he moved to leave the comms hub, Alan barrelled in. “John, it’s Virgil. Something’s up.”
A squeeze of a shoulder. “I know.” he handed his brother the screwdriver. “Here, comm relay to Brains and do as he asks. That panel over there.” Without another word, John pushed himself through the airlock and onto the gravity ring.
A sigh as his feet touched down on the floor.
A matter of steps and he was opening the door to his room.
Virgil sat on the edge of John’s bed. Elbows on knees, head in hands. He didn’t react to John’s presence at all.
On soft feet, John crossed the glass and sat quietly beside his brother.
Virgil’s shoulders were shaking.
A moment of hesitation and John reached out and gently dropped a hand on flannel covered shoulders.
The muscles beneath immediately tightened, a shudder echoing through Virgil’s frame.
A whisper barely more than breath. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
John’s throat knotted. “Not your fault.”
“No, it never is.” A ragged breath. “But it always is.” Another shudder and his brother straightened, obviously attempting to throw the emotions off. The face that emerged from his hands was pale and tearstained. A sniff and Virgil rubbed a hand across his eyes. “Sorry I worried you again.”
“Virgil.” His brother’s name fell from him in a rush. The man was emanating pain and John felt so inadequate.
Work with what you have.
His arm snaked around Virgil’s shoulders and he drew him closer. Virgil looked at him, a frown on his face.
A sudden dread that his brother might be triggered by his closeness and the anger flared in the back of John’s mind. But Virgil’s brow only crinkled in query.
So, John did something that he had wanted to do so many times during recent events. He wrapped his big brother in his arms and drew him close, bringing his head to rest on his shoulder.
The bigger man shuddered again. “John-“
“It’s okay.”
“Okay?”
“I’ve got you.”
John bit his lip and found his own eyes wet as his brother shuddered again in his arms.
Virgil’s voice could barely be heard, its baritone strength whittled down to nothing. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.”
“I-“ And it was replaced with a sob. “No. I can’t-“
“You can.”
His brother groaned in pain.
“Virgil.”
“‘S not fair.”
“Never is.”
What would Scott say? What were the magic words to release the family rock from his self-imprisonment?
“We love you, Virgil.”
The next sound was a broken sob, followed by another, and finally his big brother was crying.
He wilted in John’s arms, his massive shoulders, depleted by his illness, became frail under the emotional onslaught. John blinked away his own reaction and simply held on.
All the pain, the anguish, the torture, the arguments, the fear, the accusations...his brother had been through so much. It would be foolish to think a bout of tears could fix it all, but the release was a start, a chance to give the man a little healing.
It was a complete shock when his brother suddenly went limp in his arms.
“Eos!”
“He is asleep.”
“Again? So soon?” Virgil’s head lolled on John’s shoulder, tears still tracking down his cheeks from beneath wet eyelashes.
“He was emoting heavily. I suspect it triggered his narcolepsy.”
Damnit, the man could not get a break.
Awkwardly, John lowered his brother’s head back down onto the pillow. Standing, he dragged Virgil’s feet onto the bed and wrapped him in the thin blanket.
Once he was secure, John left the bedroom and approached the nearest holographic comms terminal.
“Thunderbird Five to Tracy Island.”
-o-o-o-
The smell of hot coffee woke him.
Virgil screwed up his face and let the muscles go, his eyes blinking. What the hell? He had been...speaking to John. Another blink and memory surfaced of what exactly he had been doing to his brother.
Shit.
“If you start kicking yourself for what happened earlier, I’m going to ask Eos to play some Neo-Boney M on loop.” John’s tone was firm from the end of the bed.
The threat was solid. Virgil hated the revival group. There were certain things that deserved to stay buried.
“Do that and I’m torching your ABBA collection.”
A snort. “You’d have to find it first.”
“I have an AI in my head.”
A pair of turquoise eyes pinned him to the pillow. “Really? You want to test my daughter’s loyalty?”
Virgil sighed and rubbed his face with his hands, hoping to god his brain would spare him the headache if he moved.
“Do that and I’m joining the circus and moving to Venezuela.” Eos’ voice was light over the comm system and a laugh echoed somewhere in the back of Virgil’s head.
John sipped his coffee. “Then I guess we won’t be doing that.”
Virgil frowned. “What’s in Venezuela?”
“Oh, they have been doing some very interesting AI experiments down there. Joe 23 is quite charming.”
Both brothers stared up at her camera in astonishment.
“You’ve spoken with other AIs?” John’s voice was strangled.
“Of course.”
“I hope you have considered the security risks, particularly considering recent events.”
Virgil’s heart froze. If Il Mago got his hands on other AIs...
“None of them have my capability. None could reach Thunderbird Five, much less endanger Virgil.”
Virgil’s eyes widened and his heart hit the floor. “Reach me?”
“Eos!” John’ voice was sharp.
“What? They can’t hurt him.”
“Eos! We will discuss this later!”
He hadn’t known there were other AIs. It made sense. Eos was unique, but experts had been experimenting with artificial intelligence for a very long time. The thought that he might be vulnerable to other intelligences....
Voice parched. “There better be more coffee where that came from.”
John didn’t answer. He reached behind and pulled out a sealed thermos and handed it over.
Virgil sat up in the bed and accepted the drink.
I’m sorry, Virgil. Are you upset about the other intelligences? They can’t reach you. Some of them can barely speak. None of them are capable of what I am. A pause. Are you okay?
He didn’t answer, not wanting to think at all. The coffee was scalding hot as it hit the back of his throat and he was ever grateful.
Please, Virgil. I’m sorry. I won’t speak to them again, I promise. She was getting agitated and it vibrated his mind.
The breath rushed out of him. “It’s okay, Eos. I’m fine.”
You’re lying! I can tell. Please, Virgil. Forgive me?
“It’s fine, Eos!” Just...just give me a moment. Please!
She backed off immediately.
He sighed, took another swig of coffee and closed his eyes. Just breathe.
Breathe.
“Virgil?”
“I’m fine!” It was a shout and it was loud.
John raised a hand and backed off as much as his daughter.
And Virgil felt worse.
“Shit.” He rubbed his face with his hand. “Sorry.”
John was staring at him, thoughts darting back and forth behind his eyes. A drawn in breath and his brother’s expression became firm. “Virgil, I want you in the infirmary.”
He blinked. “John-“
“Now.”
“I’m fine.”
“You are not fine!”
Virgil jumped. John rarely raised his voice. It was his turn to stare.
“You’ve been to hell and back. You can’t possibly be ‘fine’.” That last word was snarled. “I need to check you over.”
“I’ve spent most of the last couple of months in the infirmary, John!”
“Then a few more minutes won’t hurt. You can visit mine for a little variety.”
“John-“
“Don’t argue with me, please. You will go to the infirmary even if I have to wait you out until you fall asleep again and I will check you over then.”
Virgil froze, lack of choice and power slapping him in the face.
“Father-“
Virgil cut her off. “Eos, shut it.” It came out sharp and nasty.
Well, that convinces me that Father is right. You need an examination.
“Leave me alone!” It came out as a desperate plea as far from his usually calm self as it could be. His head spun. “Leave me alone, leave me alone, please leave me alone, I can’t, I can’t, please, god, please, no more, please no more, make it stopmakeitstop, please make it stop, please, please...” Part of him sensed that something was very wrong. The rest of him was lost in a maelstrom.
An alarm sounded somewhere. Eos was calling his name. There were hands. He fought them, but more hands appeared and he was trapped.
That only made him fight more.
There was yelling. A young woman with flame red hair and a white dress caught his face and held him still. Uncle!
Hands held his body, but her eyes held his mind. Eos.
Green, aquamarine, turquoise, so deep he could fall into them.
So he did.
-o-o-o-
It happened so quickly, John was slow to react.
One minute he was verbally wrestling a stubborn brother to submit to a medical examination, the next that brother was pleading, heart wrenchingly desperate, tears in his eyes.
Eos was alarmed, reporting anomalous brain activity. Virgil’s coffee hit the floor and the hot liquid ran along the gravity ring.
His brother’s anguish drew him close in a need to comfort, but the moment his hand touched a shoulder, Virgil started fighting him.
It was uncoordinated and hysterical, but Virgil was a big man. An alarm sounded in the satellite and John vaguely registered Eos calling Alan and Brains. John was too busy avoiding getting his head handed to him.
A fist caught him on the arm as John grabbed a wrist. “Virgil!” That wrist yanked and John lost his footing almost immediately. He was dragged a couple of steps, but Alan grabbed Virgil’s other hand and the panic was deflected.
Neither younger brother was strong enough to tackle their tank of a brother at his usual fitness level, but the last few months had taken a serious toll on his health and the strength just wasn’t there anymore.
Brains grabbed a first aid kit. John and Alan struggled to hold Virgil...
“Father!”
Virgil dropped like a ragdoll, John and Alan staggering to support his sudden weight.
“O-on the floor. L-lay him on the floor. Vitals.”
John’s heart was in his throat as they ascertained that their brother was breathing, heart beating, alive.
His own respiratory reflex shuddered and let air out between his teeth.
Alan grabbed a collapsible hover gurney from the tiny medbay and moments later their brother was ensconced in the tiny room.
“What happened?” Alan’s voice hit a high pitch of worry.
“Th-that is w-what we will ascertain.” Brains worked with the tiny facility, connecting Virgil to an array of monitoring equipment. The reassuring beep of a regular heartbeat was a beautiful sound.
“Eos?” His daughter was unusually silent. When he got no response, his heart rate jumped a notch. “Eos!”
It wasn’t another attack was it? Please, no!
“John?” His heart missed a beat as she finally answered him.
“Eos? What can you tell us?”
“I...” Her voice trailed off.
“Eos?”
“He overloaded his system and forced a shutdown.” Her voice was puzzled. “Why?”
John glanced at his prone brother. So pale, so hurting, so wane. “Was there any incursion?”
“No. His...thoughts grew more and more distressed until he shut down.”
There was a mutter from the bed. Virgil’s head moved first to one side and then to the other. His eyes scrunched up and he groaned.
“V-Virgil?”
Another groan and he opened his eyes. “Brains?”
“How are you f-feeling?”
Those eyes blinked slowly. “Like crap. M’head...”
“Pain level, one to ten?”
It took Virgil a moment to answer. “F-four. Where am I?” Brown eyes peered slowly around the room until they latched onto John. They widened for just a microsecond before relaxing. “John. Thunderbird Five.”
So, his pain level was probably closer to eight if his previous report record ran true.
“H-have you eaten today?” Brains consulted a readout on his tablet.
Again with the slow blink as Virgil turned his head towards Brains again. “Umm...”
“He hasn’t eaten since he arrived here and that was a good five hours ago.” John mentally kicked himself. Busy was no excuse regarding his brother’s health.
Virgil was staring at him. “Five hours?!”
“You’ve been asleep for most of it.”
“Asleep?” The word was whispered and those eyes closed and didn’t open again.
Soft breathing and John realised that was exactly what his brother was doing. “Brains, what the hell is going on? He’s fallen asleep again.”
Brains was muttering to himself, fiddling with a hypodermic. He strapped up Virgil’s arm and drew blood from a vein. Shoving the sample into the blood analyser unit, his fingers danced over the controls. “I have my suspicions. I-if it is w-what I think it is...” There was an uncharacteristic anger in Brain’s voice. A blink and John realised the engineer was glaring at the analyser.
John’s hand drifted down to rest on Virgil’s leg. His brother didn’t notice.
There was a solid moment of silence punctuated by Virgil’s soft breathing before the analyser pinged its readiness.
Brains hit a few more buttons, muttered again, before hitting more, drawing further information from the machine. Another moment and it pinged again.
“Brains to Tracy Island.”
“Brains? How is he?” Scott had returned to the island half an hour ago, but he was still in his uniform, his expression predictably worried.
“Virgil is experiencing a dangerous deficiency in several crucial minerals, mostly iron and magnesium. I will send you a formula. I need you to visit Wellington and pick up some supplies.”
Scott paused a split second before moving. “FAB.”
Brains cut off the connection, turned back to Virgil and activated the bed’s holographic interface. A hologram of his brother’s body flickered into existence above the bed. A twist of his wrist and Brains focussed in on Virgil’s skull, bringing the image to a larger size and higher resolution.
The metallic filigree of the interface spiderwebbed across his brother’s frontal lobe.
John shivered.
The engineer continued to mutter to himself, focussing as close as the equipment would allow. “I have a th-theory. Virgil is showing a depletion of his mineral stores well into a serious d-deficiency range. This would explain his d-depression and ir-rationality. However, it does n-not give us a c-cause.” Brains frowned. “I had s-suspected this w-would be a problem and Virgil has been given sup-plements, b-but even if he m-missed one, the d-deficiency should not be this bad.” Another frown and the engineer returned to muttering.
John stared at the holographic portrayal of the device that had caused so much pain.
“Eos?”
“Yes, John?”
“Are you able to check on the condition of the interface and the nanites in Virgil’s system?”
There was a silence. Virgil began to snore. Another moment.
“Interface is fully functional. Virgil is asleep, however his mind is somewhat chaotic. Nanites...count is higher than previous.” There was a frown in her voice.
“There are more nanites? How?”
There was silence for a moment. “Father, they have reproduced. System logs report...the interface was damaged and required repair. More nanites were needed, so more were made. Checking....redundancy code was activated and enacted. Resources were required.”
And Virgil was the resource. It was left unsaid, but as Brains straightened, his expression grim, it didn’t need to be.
“Damn.” It came out as a single whispered breath. “Eos, we went through that code with a fine-toothed comb, where was this redundancy code? We rewrote the majority of their programming to prevent something like this from happening.”
Brains shifted where he stood and frowned. “W-we were more concerned with stopping the growth of the in-terface, J-John. We kn-knew there would b-be a m-maintenance cost. Unfortunately, it c-caught us un-awares.” A sigh. “We can c-correct this and m-monitor closely. It is j-just a m-matter of b-balancing between wh-what the nanites n-need and levels of toxicity in relation to the r-rest of V-Virgil’s body.”
On the bed, Virgil snorted in his sleep and rolled over, curling up as if cold. John grabbed one of the medbay blankets and, reaching through the holograms above his brother, draped the thin covering over the sleeping man.
As if to be particularly endearing, Virgil immediately snuggled up under the warmth. Another snort and soft snoring echoed through the room.
John swallowed. “Brains, are you saying that the levels of minerals the nanites need could be toxic?”
The engineer sighed again. “I d-don’t know yet. I need to run further tests. Extra supplements as w-with any m-medication have their limits.” He shifted where he stood. “W-we will start with an increase and see how we g-go.”
The expression on Brains’ face wasn’t giving John the greatest confidence.
Virgil snorted again, muttered something in his sleep, and began drooling on his pillow.
-o-o-o-
Uncle?
Hmmm-mmm.
Virgil?
Soft piano music began playing and he couldn’t help but smile. Chiddi’s sonata, a light and lively dance on a Sunday afternoon. It always made him feel like dancing. He swirled around the wooden floor of the comms room and found a young woman in his hands. Red hair, green eyes and a flash of white dress as they spun around together.
It was nice to have someone to dance with.
Uncle, are you going to wake up? She was smiling up at him and while the room continued to spin around them slowly, they had stopped moving. Who?
A sparkle in her eyes.
Eos.
Time to wake up, Uncle. Her hand was in his.
She took a step and he had to follow.
Pain crashed into him. Voices. God, his head.
“Pain c-count, one to ten?”
Eleven. “S-six. Brains, what the hell?”
“His estimate is actually much higher, Hiram.” Eos’ voice danced all around him. Don’t lie about your health, Uncle.
“I will do what I damn well want to, Eos!” Augh, he clutched his head. Damn, that hurt.
Fingers fumbled at his wrist and something cold shot up his arm. He groaned, but then the pain started to fade. Oh, thank god. He melted into the bed. Yes, he was lying on a bed.
“Better?” The soft voice came from near his head. He blinked and a blue and gold blur slowly resolved itself into little Johnny.
“Better.” It came out little more than a sigh. A blink. A frown. “What happened?”
“You fell asleep again.”
“Again?” Another blink. “I was dancing. Around and around.” He smiled. “With Eos. She looks so much like you. Lovely long red hair, eyes aquamarine like the ocean in the sun. So young, so old, so amazing. We need to protect her, John.” He reached out and grabbed his brother’s arm. “Promise me we’ll protect her.” His brother’s eyes, that same aquamarine, widened and stared down at him. “Promise me, John, we can’t let him hurt her. We can’t.”
His brother nodded slowly. “We will protect her, Virgil, I promise.”
He believed him. If anyone could do it, Johnny could. “Thank you, thank you.” He squeezed his brother’s arm and John’s fingers wrapped around his, tightening in return.
-o-o-o-
Virgil’s eyes were glazed by the haze of necessary medication, but he was awake. Three times he had awoken and fallen asleep almost immediately.
Brains actually swore. It was something John had never heard the engineer do, and in his native language no less.
Eos had been worried as much as John and Scott...Scott was only on the Island because Grandma ordered him to stay put. Consequently, John was on a five-minute update rotation for his eldest brother.
Speaking of which...count down....
Scott’s hologram flashed up beside the bed. “Thunderbird Five, report!”
Virgil jumped, his eyes going wide. “Scott? Is that you? Really you? Please be you. Eos? John?” His brother’s eyes latched onto him and widened even further before darting back to Scott, to John, to Scott...shit. “Not you, too, Scotty, please no.” Fear crumpled his brow.
“Virgil.” John squeezed the hand on his arm, holding it close. “It is Scott. I promise. Eos, tell him.”
Virgil’s frown deepened for a moment, his eyes going distant. A soft smile spread over his face and he closed his eyes.
It was John’s turn to frown. “Eos? Tell me what’s happening.”
“I’m sorry, John, but he’s slipping into sleep again.”
“Sleep?” Scott’s voice was worry itself. “Are we any closer to working out why?”
Brains, who had been absorbed in a readout from the EEG woven into Virgil’s hair, suddenly spun and grabbing a hypodermic needle, quickly drew some blood from the tap in the crook of Virgil’s elbow.
Virgil didn’t notice. He began to snore again.
John sighed.
The blood sample was shoved into the analyser and Brains stabbed the machine. “Eos, I-I need a nanite activity r-report. Access their logs and send to m-my t-tablet, p-please.”
“Yes, Hiram.” The tablet pinged.
For a few minutes there was only the sound of Brains muttering to himself and Virgil’s soft snores.
The expletive that shot out of Brains’ mouth a moment later was enough to curl even John’s toes.
“What’s wrong?” Scott still hovered beside the bed, his gaze caught between his brothers and the once again muttering engineer.
“They are p-putting him to sleep.”
“What? Who?”
“The nanites. When m-mineral r-resources drop too low, they stimulate a sleep cycle so Virgil’s body shuts down.” There was an untranslated mutter. “This cannot stay this w-way. They cannot have control.” He turned away again, stabbing the analyser with his fingers.
“John?”
He didn’t have any answers. Not yet.
Virgil snorted and rolled over in his sleep, dragging cables and IV. John gently untangled him.
“John?”
“I don’t know, Scott. As soon as I do, you will, too.”
His brother’s expression reflected the frustration in his own. “Understood, Tracy Island out.”
The hologram dissipated.
John sighed. “Do we have anything, Brains?”
“It appears the interface m-may have been damaged during the encounter with Il M-mago.”
“We didn’t detect any damage.” Both John and Brains had scanned their brother thoroughly after the incident, desperate to make sure he wasn’t hurt further.
Brains looked down a moment. “I’m afraid we m-must have missed something. The n-nanite logs definitely show a sudden increase in activity.”
“They didn’t at the time.” John’s stomach twisted. He hated this. The not knowing and his brother’s life in the balance.
Brains sighed. “No, they didn’t.”
John straightened. “Eos, I need a complete listing of all the nanites code. I want all their logs. I want everything.”
“Yes, John.”
He gently squeezed Virgil’s hand and placed in on the bed beside the sleeping man. “Brains, I’ll be in my office.”
“I will monitor him.”
“Thank you, Brains.”
The image of their genius engineer leaning over his prone brother kept him company for the following hours of writing code.
-o-o-o-
Do you like dancing?
I love to dance.
I’ve never seen you do it.
It is much more fun with a partner.
You have your brothers.
He laughed. Not quite the dance partners I had in mind.
What about Kayo? She has a great deal of control over her body.
Virgil frowned and stared at his niece. To be honest, it has never occurred to me.
You should ask her. I’m sure she would love to dance with you.
He shrugged. Grandma has danced with me in the past.
It was Eos’ turn to eye him as they spun around the room. While Mrs Tracy is quite capable, I don’t think she is quite the partner you have in mind either.
Virgil led her into another twirl across the balcony of the comms room, reality intruding on fantasy. It doesn’t matter now.
She drew them to a stop. What do you mean? You said you loved dancing. Why don’t you find someone to dance with?
Eos-
If you are going to use the interface as an excuse, I’m going to pull out that Neo-Boney M recording.
Don’t you dare.
A quicksilver smile and his niece danced across the balcony by herself, her arms outspread, dress twirling. I agree, this is fun. You should do it more often.
He sighed. Have you finished updating the code yet?
She spun again while staring up at the sky. Oh, that. I managed that in the second before you realised I was even here.
What?
I wanted to try this dancing again. It is lovely.
He searched his memory looking for any change or difference and found nothing. Is it working okay?
She stopped spinning and faced him. Everything is fine, Uncle. I promise.
Okay.
We will make this better. She approached him slowly. Hiram, Father and I will make this work.
I hope so.
He backed up and sat himself down on his piano stool. This place was so real, but so not home.
Can I wake up now?
She stared at him, her head tilted slightly to one side. Hiram, has started a regime to replace your mineral stores. He has given you several injections and is monitoring the results. There have been more blood tests.
He would have complained about being a pincushion, but to be honest he had had so much worse. Can I wake up?
You don’t want to dance anymore?
Eos.
Okay, okay. She reached for his hand and he let her take it, following.
-o-o-o-
John was tired, but determined.
“Eos, how is he?”
“Memory response is good. Knowledge retrieval fast. The interface is working well. Nanite response in minimal. He wants to wake up.”
“Give it a moment longer.” He turned to Brains. “Are his levels responding.”
“Slowly. It will t-take some t-time to b-bring them up to healthy levels. He will n-need m-monitoring for some days p-possibly weeks. I r-recommend we r-return him to Tracy Island for his own comfort. Mrs T-Tracy, Scott and G-Gordon are fully c-capable of r-retrieving the blood samples n-needed. I can m-monitor from here and continue r-repairs to Thunderbird Five.”
“Virgil is far more important than Five.”
Brains stared at him calmly. “He will be well, J-John.”
John let his shoulders drop. He hated this. Hated this powerlessness.
“Virgil is becoming insistent.”
“Okay, Eos. Wake him up.”
His brother lay on his back, face pale...which wasn’t surprising since he was actually anaemic. Eyelashes on pale cheeks fluttered. Brown irises sought his.
“Hey, Virgil. You with us?”
A blink. A frown. “I think so.”
“Are you in any pain?” Brains hovered beside the bed.
Virgil turned his head towards the engineer. “Headache.” Another slow blink and he turned back to John. “Eos likes to dance.”
It was John’s turn to blink.
Brains interrupted by relaying Virgil all the necessary medical information about his condition. His brother nodded once before once again latching his eyes onto John.
Somewhat unnerved by the intense but silent stare, John shifted where he stood. “You ready to go home, Virgil?”
“Home?”
“Back to Tracy Island.”
“Oh, yes, sure.” The stare continued.
“Virgil?”
His brother didn’t answer immediately, still staring at John. He opened his mouth to say something, but suddenly appeared at a loss for words. A blink and then, his voice rough, “You should be proud. Very proud.”
It took John a moment to connect the dots. But when he did, he straightened.
“I am.” A dip of his head. “Of both of you.”
-o-o-o-
Virgil returned home. He was quiet, but his mood appeared to be stable and possibly improving. Brains and John sent him down via the elevator, Scott at the other end to help his brother out of the seat and harness. Between Grandma, Scott and Gordon, he wouldn’t be alone at all. It was thought best that considering his induced depression and possible mood swings, that he should not be left unattended.
Virgil grumbled, but complied.
Of course, his blood tests would continue and Eos was monitoring the nanites closely. Virgil couldn’t sneeze without someone taking notes.
It was necessary. He had to be saved.
That bastard was still out there. Somewhere.
John floated in the hub, eyes scanning the code output of the nanites in Virgil’s blood. He watched their reactions to Virgil’s reactions. His brother was currently grumbling at Scott. Eos had rolled virtual eyes at that, throwing several exasperated questions at John as to why his brother was such a stubborn ass.
“Because that is one of the reasons he is still alive.”
And why the Hood didn’t currently have him under his thumb, why he could now see and speak to John without innate terror, why he hadn’t thrown himself into Thunderbird Three’s silo and why Thunderbird Five was still mostly in one piece.
They all relied on that stubborn.
John sighed.
The code scrolled past.
His eye caught something. “Eos, can you pull up that secondary function on the third tier?”
“This one?”
The code lines appeared midair and he re-read them. “I didn’t write this.”
“No.”
“I’ve never seen this. I thought we pulled all the code.”
“One moment please.”
John waited.
Waited.
Waited.
“Eos?”
“Please hold.”
His shoulders grew tight under his suit.
A breath.
Another.
“They are capable of writing their own code.”
“What?! How?”
“Investigating.”
“They are reacting to certain situations. When one gets triggered another will respond and alter the code of the first to assist its needs.” The AI paused. “It is rather an intriguing concept.”
“How does this affect our code? And how did we miss the code that initiates this process?”
“I don’t know, John.”
“Then we need to find out. This is Virgil’s life!”
“I know, John. I will do my best.”
He sagged where he floated. Damn. “I know you will, Eos. I’m sorry.”
“Apology accepted.”
His eyes returned to tracking the code, now picking out the small differences that weren’t there when he input the code. “Eos?”
“Yes, John.”
“Do you feel hate?”
“Are you referring to the people who did this to Virgil.”
“Yes, I am.”
“Then most definitely.”
“He is still out there. He could attack at any time.”
“I know. I have put up as many defences as possible.”
“You know they won’t be enough.”
Silence.
“Eos?”
“I have to protect him.”
“But you can’t.”
“I can try!”
A swallow. “So can I.” He straightened, determination and his own version of Tracy stubborn setting in. “I want every piece of information we have about the interface, how it functions, what it is made of, everything. I want it here now.”
“John?”
“We are going to find a way.” His lips thinned. “Virgil shouldn’t have to stand alone.”
“I’m going to stand with him.”

It will probably be a quiet day for the Tigers.
Somehow we have come to the end of the 2020 recruiting cycle. In yonder times, there was no Early Signing Period meaning National Signing Day was THE day and it was often a circus. However, with the majority of the 2020 class having already signed, there will likely be very little drama tomorrow, especially for the Auburn Tigers.
Tigers Pickup Preferred Walk On
Before we talk about what to expect tomorrow, I think it’s important to highlight an interesting pickup the Tigers got yesterday. 3* QB Sawyer Pate lead Thompson to a state championship which included thrashing Central, a program with some familiar names on it for Auburn recruiting fans in 4* WR EJ Williams and 4* OT Javion Cohen. Pate threw for over 3,000 yards, 41 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 2019 yet did not receive a single offer. However, Auburn might prove the beneficiary as they offered the Thompson standout a preferred walk on opportunity this past weekend and yesterday he accepted.
Committed!! #WarEagle @CoachGusMalzahn @coachchadmorris @Keith247Sports @Rivals @247Sports @YellowhammerFB @coachmarkf @WARRIORNATION20 pic.twitter.com/0N60wF03iN
— Sawyer Pate (@PateSawyer) February 4, 2020
Pate is listed as a pro style quarterback but has some elusiveness to his game. He might not break off many 20+ yard scampers but he’s quick enough to escape pressure in the backfield and pickup positive yardage if it’s there. At 6’1” 210 lbs, he’s a well built kid with the size to play at the next level. His delivery is a bit funky but he’s insanely accurate completing almost 75% of his passes this past season. Don’t be surprised if this kid ends up on scholarship in the not too distant future. He’s got a chance to at least battle for that backup spot this fall.
National Signing Day Preview
Considering Auburn signed 23 players back in December and already has pledges from two other blue chip prospects, tomorrow shouldn’t be a too dramatic day for the Tigers. Here’s a quick breakdown on who has already signed and who to watch out for tomorrow.

5* RB Tank Bigsby
4* DL Zykeivous Walker
4* WR Kobe Hudson

Auburn Commits
4* DL Deandre Butler
4* TE Brandon Frazier
Auburn Targets
With only 1-2 spots left, Auburn doesn’t have much room for new additions. The Tigers took some big swings in the late period but it looks like they will come up empty for the most part. There’s always a chance of a late surprise or a name that hasn’t been reported popping up (ala JaTarvious Whitlow not too long ago). For now though these are the names to follow. I am using the same confidence prediction I did back in December:
As for my predictions, I am gonna add a confidence level of Lock (VERY confident in pick), 50/50 (leaning that direction but far from certain) and No Idea (literally just me guessing).
Here we go...
5* OT Broderick Jones | 6’5” | 298 lbs | Lithonia, GA | Georgia Commit
Contenders: Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Illinois
What was supposed to be the biggest storyline for Auburn heading into National Signing Day turned into a bit of a dud. After electing not to sign early and telling reporters at the Under Armour All-America Game that things were “50/50” between Auburn and Georgia, there was some understandable excitement about what might happen in this race come February 5th. The Tigers had the last visit and it was thought that might be enough to push them over in this race.
Except he never took that visit...
UGA’s coaching staff visited Jones on Friday evening to watch him play basketball and then stayed all the way to midnight preventing him from making the trip to the Plains. However, he still could have shown up on Saturday or Sunday but instead elected to cancel the trip all together. I know there have been some internet rumors that maybe he made to campus for a secret unofficial but I doubt those to be true. Once again, Auburn will sign another recruiting class without a single blue chip (meaning 4* or 5*) offensive tackle.
Lovely...
Prediction: Georgia (Lock)
4* DT McKinnley Jackson | 6’2’ | 327 lbs | Lucedale, MS
Contenders: Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Texas A&M
This one has felt unlikely for some time and barring a true shocker I don’t see Jackson putting on an Auburn cap tomorrow morning. The Mississippi standout took an official visit to the Plains last fall but it appears the Tigers are sitting #4 in this race. There was a lot of Alabama buzz up until this weekend and now it appears the Aggies might have snuck ahead. I really don’t know where he goes other than it won’t be Auburn so I’ll take the safe pick and go Bama. They annoyingly tend to win these types of battles more often than they lose.
Prediction: Alabama (No Idea)
4* DL Princely Umanmielen | 6’4” | 249 lbs | Manor, TX
Contenders: Auburn, Baylor, Florida, Texas
When Umanmielen decommited from the Longhorns back in October, it was thought Auburn would be a major factor in this race. However, he never made it to campus that fall. It was reported he might take an official visit to the Plains this past weekend but Auburn apparently decided to part ways. With so little spots left, it appears they won’t use that last one on a defensive lineman. I think the Gators are the darkhorse in this race but I am gonna pick he ends up signing with the program he had been committed to last fall.
Prediction: Texas (No Idea)
3* DT Marquis Burks | 6’3” | 285 lbs | Chicago, IL
Contenders: Auburn
I do expect at least one Boom tomorrow in the form of the nation’s #4 ranked JUCO defensive tackle. The Tigers are looking for depth in the interior of its defensive line next season and see Burks as someone that can provide it. Rodney Garner scouted quite a few top JUCO defensive tackles and settled on Burks last fall. That says a lot about this kid’s potential. He never took any other official visits after his Auburn one in December.
Prediction: Auburn (Lock)
3* CB Alfahiym Walcott | 6’1” | 190 lbs | Wilmington, NC
Contenders: Auburn, Baylor
Walcott showed up suddenly on Auburn’s radar last week. The Tigers offered the JUCO standout and then hosted him on an official visit last Thursday and Friday. If Auburn decides to push I think they would have a great chance at landing him. However, it does not appear that is happening at this time. Dave Aranda hosted Walcott right after his Auburn OV and it appears the Bears are the team to beat right now. Anything can change over the next 24 hours but as of this morning, I don’t see Walcott landing in this class.
Prediction: Baylor (50/50)
3* OT Brady Ward | 6’7” | 310 lbs | Mobile, AL
Contenders: Arkansas, Auburn, Ole Miss
There was another interesting visitor this past weekend. Brady Ward is a massive human being at 6’7” 310 lbs with an impressive reported offer list. However, I am not sure how many of those offers are actually committable. Ole Miss is reportedly considering giving him a grayshirt opportunity. The Tigers appear to be offering either a preferred walk on spot or a blueshirt. My guess is unless an SEC program comes in late with a full ride, Ward takes the Auburn offer. This could end up being a sneaky pickup down the road for the Tigers.
Prediction: Auburn (50/50)
Final Thoughts
It was going to be hard to top Auburn’s excellent Early Signing Day given how few spots remained in this class and the fact the Tigers picked up commitments already from two top targets. The Jones news hurts, especially since all the buzz heading into his Georgia OV was that Auburn had the momentum. But overall, this a solid class for the Tigers and one that has a chance to fill some immediate needs for next season. We will see if this staff has anymore surprises hidden up their sleeves and given their history of hitting on late additions (Daniel Thomas, Tyrone Truesdell, Boobee Whitlow), I wouldn’t put it past the Tigers to sign another under the radar stud tomorrow. Otherwise, they will likely use that last spot in the graduate transfer market.
War Eagle!

Anni miei
I still carry a very distinctive memory of something that happened to me 23 years ago as a 7-year-old. It was one of my daily routines with my mom, watching american soap opera ”Bold and the Beautiful” when during one of the commercial breaks there was Laura with the album ”Laura” and ”Gente”, ”Strani Amori” or something like that. I just remember the voice, the sweet melody and the pretty girl sitting on a beige cushion. And how it all hit me. It was love at first listen, at first look or however you wanna think of it...anyhow the feeling hasn’t faded in 23 years.
Tumblr media
Then, ”Laura” album and especially the song ”Amori Infiniti” were my ultimate favourites and in fact for many years to come after that. Never getting old though how much time would go by. The melodies, the voice and lyrics I’d always go back to. The tunes of my childhood. I literally listened the same album for another seven years because I was totally unaware of any other LP albums being released until it was time for another tv-commercial this time about ”Tra Te e Il Mare”. Needless to say how I adored to hear again the familiar voice and sounds that had gone stronger during the years. Eagerly I translated the lyrics to Finnish with a dictionary in my hand and zero Italian classes in my head.
youtube
Tra Te e il mare, 2000
The following ”The Best of: E Ritorno da Te” was basically a brand new album for me! While waiting for her English album to be published I collected slowly her albums along the years.. some were harder to find in Finland than others. But I was learning her story. With her singing I also discovered the beauty of Spanish and Italian languages which I began later to study. With ”From the Inside” I remember the fresh sound brought by the language change. I loved it how I didn’t need a dictionary anymore to understand what she was singing about! And even though she hadn’t written any of the songs on the album I still recognized her. Her image had changed but it was still her. Even today I’m still the most saddest about this album not being as successful as it should have deserved to be. But even without the chart success she is equally amazing singer and performer also in English.. or in any language she chooses to sing. Americas, UK, the entire English speaking market – you have no idea what you’re missing.
Tumblr media
”Resta in Ascolto” was the first album I remember to have really been waiting for. I remember the excitement of hearing the first 30 sec. of the title song and finally seeing the music video for the first single. How carefully I listened the album and its every note when I finally had it in my hands. I loved it already then but who knew how much more these songs would mean to me during the years to come. These were the days when I started to think about my own LP page for the first time. But with a lack of technical skills and social media the idea stayed as just as an idea.
youtube
Come se non fosse stato mai amore, 2004
In 2006 Laura was a Grammy and a Latin Grammy winner. I knew these awards meant so much more on national level in Italy but my joy and pride were dedicated only for her as a person and as an artist who had created something amazing and really deserved the credit, on an international level for that. On ”Io Canto” I was one of those who had never been exposed the poetry and beauty of the music Laura had chosen on the album. It was educating, refreshing and eyes opening. Not only in Laura’s musical life but also in Italian music in general. She sounds so amazing when she gives in to someone else’s writing. There’s something very fragile and emotional compared to when she sings her own pieces. After being a fan of 12 years I finally joined to the official fan club.
Tumblr media
Before 2007 San Siro Stadium did not say much to me, especially since I don’t watch football. At all. I did not understand the fuss around the concert but when the DVD/CD came out… from the first notes on – I knew. I think there will not be a concert or a live release that could top San Siro 2007. Even today I cannot watch it without crying at the end. The emotion tops over everything even through tv screen - nevermind that your favourite song isn’t included or the camera crew was kind of lost for the entire evening.. the faults don’t count. It would also be the one (out of the live releases) I’d recommend to someone who’s never seen or heard of Laura before. All the essential parts are there.
youtube
Una storia che vale - live 2007
Personally ”Primavera in Anticipo” predicted what was coming to me in my personal life. During these years Laura visited Finland for several times, doing concerts and promo visits but I had not gone to any of them. Because I was shy, because I was young and did not know anyone else who’d like her music too. I literally kept her in a closet and only a few people knew about my passion for her. I was different than the other teens and I avoided bumping into opposite opinions that I didn’t wanna hear. So I kept all of this to myself.
Tumblr media
But on May 20th in 2009, it was Wednesday. The day had come when I would see her live for the very first time in my life. 15 years after falling in love with her on the album ”Laura”. I did not take a single photograph nor video. I couldn’t. Too distracting. I was just 100% on concentrated staring at her, listening to her, memorizing every sound, gesture and move she made. I was blown away by her presence and voice. Unable to believe that I was actually breathing the same air with her and sitting only a few meters away from her. I cried during the first songs. I sang with her every note until the end but I can only remember a handful of moments during the concert lasting over two hours. The most beautiful ones of my life which I thought for a long time would never happen. But it did happen. And again. On October 1st, seven years ago I traveled to Rome, Italy to attend the official Fan Club Party. The one and only I’ve ever been to. Another unique experience. I met so many people I had met online, on the FC forum who’d become my friends in real life too without never meeting them face to face. Some I haven’t met again since but the feeling of friendship is still very much alive.
Tumblr media
In 2011 I was in a crossroads and going through a difficult stage in my life and so I was not ready for ”Inedito”’s optimism and maturenes. It took me two years to understand the beauty of this album and to feel the words as my own. And how important it was to have these songs by my side when I was going through the things I did. Today it remains one of the best works of Laura and I find it criminal that it wasn’t at least nominated for Latin Grammy as its three predecessors.
youtube
Mi tengo, 2011.
As what it comes to her 20th anniversary release ”Greatest Hits” I couldn’t have imagined it to be done in any better way. It was so respectful for the old, but still with a modern touch adding new depth to the familiar songs and including even some of her less known work but which have shaped her career. It was such a perfect release! In 2014 I had my own 20th anniversary with her.
Between 2011-2014 I met Laura three times briefly, in Spain, UK and Canada. No words can describe these encounters but I gotta try at least. To meet the woman who’s voice has been speaking to me for 20 years. Whose words, emotions, melodies and music have been accompaning me for every step of the way. Hers as much as mine. Songs that were maybe a bit too adult for a 7-year-old to understand I listen today with a different perspective and wisdom.
Tumblr media
In 2014 I did what I’ve always wanted to do: created my own LP page. Even though it’s a FB one but at least it’s technically do-able for me and maybe even better way to reach people in these days than a traditional website. I wanted and still want to create a place for Finnish and international LP fans around the world where to go crazy about the most and least favorite LP songs, facts, albums, lyrics, stories, videos, translations, photos etc. Besides of FB I have a similar Tumblr page also. On Youtube and Spotify I love to create different playlists. I put a lot of effort, time and thought on my posts and I appreciate every like and comment people give even though without single reaction I do create these posts mainly for my own pleasure. My site isn’t one of those fastest growing like the Spanish/Italian speaking ones on FB but I’m proud of every 1015 (I have at the moment) friends I have.
Tumblr media
”Simili” did ”Inedito” to me. In 2015, again I was in a difficult spot in my life. Even though I didn’t exactly feel simili I still realized its greatness. The diversity between musical genres. Richness in lyrics, using talented new songwriters bringing a fresh sound. The songs grew in me for much after its release. And like ”Inedito” I hold it one of the or maybe the THE deepest and most mature LP album so far.
As the 3-year-anniversary of my FBpage  I wanted to share my childhood favourite ”Amori Infiniti” with you. For being a LP fan for the most of my life, we’ve come such a long way together. Because that’s where it all began and how this site is just a continuing piece in my LP story as in my personal life. Back in 1994 there was only ”Laura” album and this song topping everything else but today after all the years, experiences, albums and songs I couldn’t name my favorite LP album even if I wanted to. Too many great ones. Fitting into different moments in life and unable being compared against each other.
However ”Laura” stays classic. Classic 90’s. Classic Laura. So I do hope you enjoy this rarity. With me. Now and in the future. Thank you for reading.

Those that know me best know that college football is truly my favorite sport. You know what gets me pumped for college football season? I absolutely L-O-V-E ESPN’s countdown of their Top 25 Games of last season. They do this every year in July and August as they prep for the upcoming season on the gridiron. When they started their countdown, I happened to catch the 23rd best game of 2016, #23 Florida St. at #10 Miami from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, FL.
By the way, have you seen the revamped Hard Rock Stadium? Hard Rock Stadium might confuse you, but this is the place that used to be known under the following seven names: Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, Land Shark Stadium, and Sun Life Stadium. For the first time, it is finally a great looking park. They added a partial roof which must help against that scorching Florida sun. Anyway, it looks like a place I’d enjoy checking out a game.
Someday. But for now, I’m driving my son to closer stadiums. This Autumn…..Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana where we’ll see the beloved Huskers of Nebraska at Purdue on October 28.
I know……..not too exciting but it’s all part of seeing each and every B1G stadium. So far I’ve been to games at Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and of course Nebraska and Illinois. I’ve also been to Minnesota and Indiana on non-game days. So that leaves us with Ohio St., Penn St., Maryland, Michigan St., Rutgers, and of course, Purdue.
So here is the list of ESPN’s Top 25 games of 2016:
#25 – Florida St. 45 vs Ole Miss 34 – An offensive explosion. The QB’s in this one, Deondre Francois for FSU and Chad Kelly for Ole Miss inspired both teams to dream of the National Championship. Unfortunately for Ole Miss, Kelly was injured in his 9th game. They went 4-5 in his 9 starts but the offense wasn’t the problem for the Rebels. Their defense allowed 34.0 ppg! As for Francois, he played like a freshman at times, but a wonderfully talented freshman. Going into ’17, Francois is a Heisman contender and FSU is a National Championship contender, starting the season ranked #3.
#24 – Toledo 53 at BYU 55 – Brigham Young’s RB Jamaal Williams ran for 286 yards and 5 TD in this crazy 55-53 victory. This brought back shades of the ‘Wild Wild WAC’ days of yesteryear.
#23 – Pittsburgh 36 at North Carolina 37 – Both Pitt and UNC played in plenty of tight games in ’16. This one was no different.
#22 – Alabama 10 at LSU 0 – I don’t remember watching this one last year (or this year). Maybe I’m just all “Bama’d” out. Does this ten to nothing shutout surprise you? This was a typical SEC slobberknocker, I’m guessing.
#21 – N.C. State 17 at Clemson 24 (OT) – How many tight games did Clemson win in 2016? They won seven games by 7 points or less. They lost one. Spoiler alert! They finished as National Champions with a 14-1 record. That makes tight victories like this all the more important. When the Wolfpack took them to Overtime last October, it improved a shaky Clemson team to 7-0 with 4 tight wins. Most people were wondering what in the world was going on with them. I’ll tell you what was going on. They were forging bonds during tough, hard-fought wins that ultimately propelled them to legends.
#20 Central Michigan 30 at Oklahoma St. 27 – Games like this are what makes college football a special game. Remember this one? CMU threw a Hail Mary after Okie St. was penalized for throwing the ball out-of-bounds on a 4th down as time ran out. The refs wrongly gave CMU one un-timed down because of the Cowboys intentional grounding. So what do you think was gonna happen? Central Michigan caught the Hail Mary, the WR ran it all the way into the end zone after catching it in play and making an incredible run. CMU won! As for Oklahoma State?…….Talk about getting hosed!!!! They finished 11-2……I mean 10-3 doh! The NCAA referees acknowledged their mistake after the game but to no avail. You can’t open up Pandora’s box afterwards.
PS: A similar play happened here in Illinois in the IHSA high school state playoffs between Fenwick and Plainfield North. I know! What is wrong with these referees! If you don’t know for sure, get out the rulebook and consult with IHSA officials or Athletic Directors or somebody before you end up forcing a judge to sit through a courtroom case brought about by a lawsuit. In this case, Fenwick got hosed, losing 18-17 in OT! I can’t believe this really happened twice within a couple of months! Who got screwed more? I vote for Fenwick. They lost a playoff game whereas Oklahoma St. only lost a non-conference game that luckily, ultimately, didn’t derail their championship hopes. As for Fenwick, I’ll be cheering for them this Autumn.
#19 LSU 13 at Auburn 18 – Oh my God! Reliving these fantastic games is wonderful. Remember this one? In what turned out to be Coach Les “The Hat” Miles’ last game as LSU head coach, the Tigers (which one?) thought they threw a game-ending 15 yard TD pass. But wait! The officials reviewed it and determined that the snap on the last play was too late. The game clock had indeed just barely run out before the Tigers’ (which one?) center snapped the ball prior to the miraculous game winner. So who won? The Tigers……naturally. (ICYMI, Auburn’s ‘War Eagle’ won……naturally rather than the LSU “Geaux” Tigers. People wonder why our youth are so confused. I’m confused both reading AND writing this column. Whatever man, “This is the SEC!” I could probably delve into a whole sub-article here about academics in the B1G (Big Ten) vs the SEC but I’ll spare you.) Thanks Dutch!
#18 Ohio St. 30 at Wisconsin 23 (OT) – This was a solid B1G game. This column is getting too long so I’ll refrain from commenting on this one. Oh wait. I have a question for you: Is “Jump Around” a tradition? I mean, this tradition started based on a lousy 90s rap/crap/hip-hop song from 1992? Is that a tradition? Maybe the B1G is dumber, and closer to the SEC, than I thought. I know what you’re thinking……all my Wisky friends are enraged and throwing a fit right now, and possibly “unfollowing” the Dutch Lion concurrently.
#17 Florida St. 20 at Miami 19 – This one brought back memories of earlier games in this once national series but 2016’s edition was not a truly fantastic matchup. It’s good clean hate but it lacks the buildup of what it once was…..one of the greatest meaningful rivalries that the entire nation watched with eyes wide open. Did someone say “wide”, as in “Wide Right!”?
#16 Michigan 13 at Iowa 14 – Great game! Michigan had a perfect 9-0 record, ranked #2 going into Iowa City. Iowa was #1 (you’re dreaming again, of 1985!) In 2016 Iowa was unranked but primed for an upset of Jim Harbaugh. Is Iowa Jim Harbaugh’s kryptonite? Nonetheless, outside of the Hawkeyes current struggles, it was “Shades of 1985!” Seriously, it was eerie. Here’s a column I wrote last Autumn, detailing one of my all-time favorite college games that made me love the sport forever:
“How weird is it that Iowa beat Michigan 14-13 in almost the same way with almost the same score as when they beat Michigan 12-10 in 1985????
My favorite upset of the day was definitely Iowa over Michigan because it brought back so many memories of the epic 1985 #1 vs #2 matchup in Iowa City. It was October 19, 1985. I remember that day well for being 31 years ago. It’s like “Back to the Future”. I was a 10-year-old raking leaves on a cloudy, overcast, rainy October day in the Midwest.
The weather in Iowa City, IA was pretty much the same as Lake Zurich, IL on that day. You had CBS, you had Brent Musburger, you had Chuck Long quarterbacking one team while Jim Harbaugh QB’d the other. Boy, Chuck Long had an arm, huh! You could hear the pads popping the way they did in that era, especially when you had a wet field. For some reason, the pads “popped” differently back then.
You had Ronnie Harmon and Larry Station. I mean seriously, how GOOD was Ronnie Harmon! You had Jamie Morris. You had Bo Schembechler vs Hayden Fry! You had NO instant replay and Iowa’s #87 Scott Helverson got HOSED in the back of the end zone.
You had Rob Houghtlin, making 4 of 5 FG’s including the game winner for Iowa to win 12-10. He was allowed to use the tee. Do you guys remember that placekickers were allowed to use tees? I know, right?
You had that weird moment in time in which the QB could “complain” to the refs about crowd noise and the ref would actually STOP the game and tell the crowd to be quiet so that the QB could communicate with his teammates. I KNOW, RIGHT! Can you believe this actually was a rule for a brief moment in time?!? (I need to look into that further. Did the NFL impose that rule? For how many years? How subjective was it?) Harbaugh was complaining to the refs for parts of that game that made it drag. It was SUPER DUMB! What were the refs supposed to do? Do they penalize Iowa for….the fans being too loud? I want an ESPN 30 for 30 short about this strange story.
Nonetheless, don’t let that ruin your experience. It ended up being such a great day for the Big Ten, for College Football on CBS, for Ara Parseghian (God bless his soul as he just recently passed away) as the “color” man next to Brent. It was great for our Nation’s Heartland. Remember the struggles of the farming community in the mid-80s? Iowa’s farmers actually had an “ANF” logo on the Iowa helmets…..”America Needs Farmers”. I know, right!
Add it all up and it almost makes you want to become an Iowa fan……well, it wasn’t THAT cool 😉  I’m just kidding. It was really, really cool and near the top of my list of cool 80s college football memories.”
(For some reason, footage of this great game is hard to find. Stephen Barnett has most of the old great games posted as FULL games on Youtube.) Thank you Stephen. You’re a video God.)
1985 looks about the same as….
Iowa 14 Michigan 13 in 2016.
#15 North Carolina 37 at Florida St. 35 – I don’t think I watched this one live, unlike most of the games on this list. Now that the Bears drafted Mitch Trubisky, I have extra interest. Check it out and scout #10 in powder blue!
#14 Arkansas 41 at TCU 38 (2OT)
#13 Army 21 vs Navy 17 – This rivalry is so special. Lately, Navy wins almost every year. Not last year. Army broke a long, 14 game losing streak, winning 21-17. I watch it just to see the passion of the cadets and the midshipmen. Who cares who wins? Well, Army and Navy vets do. My buddy Bush is an Army guy. “Go Army, Beat Navy!” My buddy Thomas Sullivan Magnum, P.I. is a Navy guy. “Go Navy, Beat Army!”
#12 Tennessee 38 at Texas A&M 45 (2OT) – Another nutty game. Go watch it. You’ll see.
#11 Orange Bowl: Florida St. 33 vs Michigan 32 – I remember Michigan DE Taco Charlton ripping guys heads off. FSU won on Francois’s game-winning TD pass with 36 seconds left.
#10 Clemson 37 at Florida St. 34 – Fantastic game! The Tigers and Seminoles have such a long-lasting rivalry and it continues to play out better than ever the last few years. Both are National Title contenders as of late and they always seem to play tight ballgames. This is one of the newest great rivalries that isn’t getting enough hype. The winner of this game has won the ACC Atlantic Division Championship how many years in a row? The answer is 8. Every year since 2009. Each team has won 4 times. It’s probably gonna happen again in 2017, this time in Death Valley, South Carolina on November 11. Look for this year’s version to make next year’s Top 25……again.
#9 Alabama 48 at Ole Miss 43 – The Ole Miss Rebels seem to be the only team that can hang with the Crimson Tide the last few years. Last year, Ole Miss had a huge 24-3 lead, but then what happened? Oh, you know!
#8 Ohio St. 21 at Penn St. 24 – I was all geared up for this one. Good game in the 3rd quarter. Then all of a sudden the Chicago Cubs won the NL for the first time since 1945. All the local stations including ABC-7 (the only station showing OSU at PSU) decided they had to show the bozos celebrating in the streets. Ok. I’ll watch that for a minute or two. But ruin the entire, amazing 4th quarter comeback by PSU in Happy Valley? Call me furious! What a shame. Thanks for ruining an electric game atmosphere by showing people looting and pouring beers all over their idiot friends because their lovable losers finally won a league for the first time in 72 years. PSU! More like P-U. You stink!
#7 Notre Dame 47 at Texas 50 (2OT) – Good opening weekend capper on Labor Day weekend. Who is better, Malik Zaire or DeShone Kizer? Hmmmmm. Kizer threw for 5 TD. Zaire……he stunk more than Cubs fans. Who stunk more than Zaire? Head Coach Brian Kelly! If he had just declared Kizer the starter prior to the game, they may have avoided not only this loss but 7 others throughout that disastrous 2016 season. Coaches have off years too. Kelly admits he did a poor job in ’16. Another bad year soon and as the Hawk says, “He Gone!”
#6 Tennessee 34 at Georgia 31 – I’ve seen the end a billion times, but I’m still dying to watch the entire game that led up to that crazy ending. I have it saved on the DVR. Both teams’ fans were dumbstruck in the last minute. Spoiler alert…..not one but two Hail Mary’s!!!
#5 Louisville 36 at Clemson 42 – This game had one of the greatest buildups I’ve ever seen on television! Did you watch this? It was an ABC Saturday Night classic. Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit were there and ABC showed the traditional Clemson run down the hill and touching Howard’s Rock. What made this one unique was ABC had cameras outside in the street showing the bus that drove the players and Coach Dabo Swinney to the entrance gates above Howard’s Rock. Incredible intensity! (start watching at about 10 minutes in until at least the end of Louisville’s 1st series at about 21 minutes in) I felt like I was there. Honestly, the crowd and atmosphere brewed up one of the top experiences I’ve ever seen on TV. I had it saved preciously on my AT&T U-Verse DVR until those AT&T bozos screwed up and lost all my recordings earlier this Summer. Thanks AT&T! Rather, thank god for Youtube. I NEED to attend a Clemson night game someday to experience this in person. Nonetheless, this game at #5 on the countdown, will live in my memory, hopefully forever.
#4 Pittsburgh 43 at Clemson 42 – How many times was Clemson on this Top 25 list? The answer is five, with four in the top 10! That’s insane and hard to believe. That’s what makes them all the more important, knowing that they won the Championship. When DeShaun Watson threw a late interception on a bad pass into the end zone, I recall thinking, “DeShaun will just not be a good pro QB”. Then as the NFL Draft approached, I desperately wanted the Chicago Bears to take Watson 3rd overall. As it turned out, I’m really happy the Bears selected North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky. Meanwhile, Houston drafted Watson and the whole time since, I keep thinking about that Pitt interception.
#3 Michigan 27 at Ohio St. 30 (2OT) – Wow! This was a really great game. Double Overtime!! Incredibly tough defense throughout most of the game as regulation ended with a 17-17 tie. Ohio St. won 30-27 with some controversial measurements, penalty calls, LACK of penalty calls. Everyone was talking about Coach Jim Harbaugh’s ranting on the sidelines. Well, he’s a Bo Schembechler guy and after some of these referees calls, Jimmy is http://widgets.boxxspring.com/MjA1NSw0MDUzNzM1OA” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>bitter…..bitter!
I don’t blame Harbaugh. I would’ve been stretched to my limits if I was a Michigan man too. We’re already beginning to see shades of the “Ten Year War”! Depending on the length of the Harbaugh/Meyer Era, we have just embarked on what will likely go down as the “Ten Year War: Part 2”. So far, Urban Meyer leads 2-0. When will Harbaugh “put one on the board”? I’m betting on ’17. The game is in Ann Arbor on November 25.
#2 Rose Bowl: Penn St. 49 vs USC 52 – This could’ve been the best game of the year. Every time I watch and re-watch I’m just amazed by this nutty game. Ultimately, Trace McSorley was a little too aggressive, throwing 3 interceptions and showing his sophomore inexperience as PSU’s first time starting quarterback as they were outscored 17-0 in the 4th quarter. Meanwhile, over on the other sideline USC sophomore QB Sam Darnold was proving why he’s a top option for next year’s NFL Draft. He threw for 453 yards and 5 TD in one of the all-time greatest Rose Bowls.
#1 National Championship: Clemson 35 vs Alabama 31 – ‘Bama hardly ever loses. But when they do, it’s so much fun to enjoy! Hunter Renfrow’s game-winner with 1 second left was the stuff dreams are made of. Congratulations to Watson, Renfrow, Dabo Swinney, and all of the Clemson Tigers fans who have waited since 1981 to experience that National Championship feeling all over again.
So there you have it. Another amazing season. What does 2017 have for us? It all starts this week. Pumped much?
A Summer Tradition: ESPN’s Top 25 College Football Games from last season! Those that know me best know that college football is truly my favorite sport. You know what gets me pumped for college football season?

The Tigers still have at least 3 spots remaining in the 2020 class. A look at the names to know heading into the final month of 2020 recruiting cycle.
With Early Signing Day now in the rearview mirror, it’s time to turn our attention to the final weeks of the 2020 class. While Auburn did most of their work in the early period, there are still at least 3 spots to fill come February. The good thing about loading up this week is that Auburn can now focus all their energy and resources on just a select few targets. It also means some coaches will now be focused solely on 2021.
Here’s a look at the names to know as we head into the late period of the 2020 class. Chances are very good some new names will pop up in January especially at the quarterback position but for now these are the names to know.
5* OT Broderick Jones | 6’5” | 275 lbs | Lithonia, GA | Georgia Commit
I suspect that every recruiting article I write from now until February will have to include an update on this prospect. The nation’s #19 overall player and #2 OT has been committed to the Dawgs since April of 2018 which is quite awhile in the world of recruiting. However, Auburn has never relented in their pursuit hosting the big man multiple times on campus over the past two years including for both the UGA game and the Iron Bowl to finish the season. The Dawgs sent him a National Letter of Intent this past week in hopes of getting him to shut down his recruitment but he elected to not sign. Jones will likely take official visits to both Auburn and Georgia next month.
The Tigers have always lurked but with Sam Pittman’s departure all of a sudden the door is more than cracked open for the flip. This is far from a slam dunk and you know Kirby Smart won’t go away quietly. But this is also a very real possibility and not a pipe dream. If the Tigers could pull off the flip it would solidify this class as Gus Malzahn’s best ever in my eyes. Let’s see what happens....
4* DL Jay Hardy | 6’4” | 290 lbs | Chattanooga, TN | Auburn Commit
The Tigers beat out the instate Vols for Hardy’s pledge back in November. However, the McCallie standout elected not to sign early with Auburn this past week. It’s not a complete shock as Hardy had said his whole recruitment that he planned to wait until February so he could sign at same time as his teammates. Auburn had hoped to convince him otherwise and there had been some hope a couple of weeks ago it would happen. But Tennessee has not stopped its pursuit and encouraged him to wait as well. In the end, he decided to hold off which means the Tigers will have to fight to keep his pledge until February.
As of today, I like Auburn’s chances of keeping the stud lineman. I know the memory of George Pickens’s recruitment is burned into all of our minds but the year before Auburn signed all three of their holdouts in Matthew Hill, Coynis Miller and Richard Jibunor. Hopefully Hardy’s recruitment turns out like the latter and not the former.
4* DT McKinnley Jackson | 6’2” | 327 lbs | Lucedale, MS
I imagine if Auburn were allowed to write their own ending to this class it would be pretty simple. Hang onto Jay Hardy, flip Broderick Jones and sign McKinnley Jackson. Mississippi’s top ranked player has been a top target for the nation’s elite since he was a sophomore in high school. For a brief period of time he was committed to LSU but has since backed away and now appears wide open. Both Auburn and Alabama hosted the big man on official visits in November. He will take three more in February to LSU, Texas A&M and maybe Ole Miss. I say maybe because UGA is looking to make a late charge in this race having recently offered Jackson. The Rebels’ former head coach, who has a close relationship with Jackson, is also on staff for the Dawgs. This one will be a circus to the finish but I truly believe the Tigers will be in it until the end. Can Marcus Woodson continue his great work in the Magnolia State?
4* WR Malachi Wideman | 6’4” | 180 lbs | Sarasota, FL | Florida State Commit
This one is a bit of a wildcard. The nation’s #132 ranked prospect was on campus for an unofficial visit back in late September when the Tigers thrashed Mississippi State. But not much else was heard between the sides. He took an official visit to Washington State and Florida State before the Early Signing Period. After that FSU visit last weekend, it was thought things had been shutdown and he would sign with the Noles. But on Wednesday he decided to wait.
Josh Newberg of Noles247 reported earlier this week that two of the programs in frequent contact with Wideman were Auburn and Oregon. Could the Tigers look to be adding a 5th WR? I am not really sure they have the room (thinking that 25 number might be a bit more flexible than being reported) but he’s a big time player and could be someone they decided to take if they can get him. But until he takes an official visit, I am not sure how big a threat Auburn really is in this race. Just a name to file away for now.
One other note on Wideman, he’s a two way star and would want to play basketball for the Tigers too. I do not know if Bruce Pearl has offered the big man yet. That’s something else to watch as well.
4* DL Deandre Butler | 6’5” | 280 lbs | Covington, GA | JUCO
Butler will likely officially visit Auburn in January and is a name to keep a close eye on over the coming weeks. Auburn hopes to keep Hardy and sign Jackson but if either of those go sideways Butler could be an option. He’s someone that could step in immediately and provide depth for the Tigers at both strong side end and maybe even defensive tackle. We should have a better feel for where things stand with him after his official visit. I suspect though that his recruitment is about to really heat up as teams scour the country for top defensive line talent to finish out their classes.
3* DT Marquis Burks | 6’3” | 285 lbs | Chicago, IL | JUCO
Auburn hosted the nation’s #4 JUCO defensive tackle for an official visit the weekend before the Early Signing Period which made some wonder if he would be an immediate take if the Tigers did not flip Dallas Walker. That didn’t happen, instead Burks will take his recruitment into February. My understanding is Burks would jump on board immediately if given the green light. What I don’t know is when or if ever that green light would come. If Auburn missed on Jackson would they turn to Burks or Butler? Or maybe there’s a new name that comes on the board in January. Either way, Burks’s recruitment is something to track over the final weeks of this cycle.
3* OT Jonathan Buskey | 6’7” | 320 lbs | Mobile, AL | JUCO
When Buskey committed back in February, Auburn thought they had found their starting left tackle for 2020. A lot has changed since that moment. First off, Auburn has already signed two other JUCO offensive tackles, both ranked higher than Buskey. Second, Buskey went from an expected early enrollee to possibly a non qualifier. Finally, Auburn made a serious move on Broderick Jones. Put all that together and it feels like the odds of Buskey signing in February are pretty low. My understanding is the staff is still very high on his potential and would take his signature if possible but confidence is fading he will be good to go. We will see if things trend in a more positive direction over these last months of the 2020 cycle.
K Evan McGuire | 6’4” | 210 lbs | Alabaster, AL
The Tigers appear to already be preparing for life with out a Carlson booming field goals from 50+ yards. McGuire has emerged as Auburn’s top target the question is whether or not the Tigers have room to bring him on as a full signee. If things go well in February that probably won’t happen. Would McGuire take a preferred walk on offer? Possibly but he’s getting attention from other SEC programs as well. If one of them were to offer him a full ride I think that would be hard to turn down. The ideal finish for Auburn is to get McGuire on campus as a PWO after signing Hardy, Jones and Jackson then put McGuire on a full ride in the fall.
